Alphabet Soup: Partner Typeface//Week 1

Design a typeface for a full alphabet and glyphs that represent the personality//character of your partner, produced in black ink on A1 tracing paper.

Developments based around Bebas, Helvetica & Bubblegum type

Initial ideas
What came across when talking to Sarah was her love of line & bold letterforms which had other elements to them. Initially I looked at the work of he favourite graphic designer HelloVon and his approach to typography, which I think fitted in with Sarah's personal tastes. I also had the idea of looking into technological typefaces because Sarah loves her iPhone but I am struggling to communicate this within the type. After the crit I decided to consider more carefully the base typeface.

I decided to develop one of the typefaces I tested before the crit. I am going to take away some of the elements of it and use a line pattern//block fill in varying parts of it to represent the different aspects of Sarah's nature and more importantly to create a typeface that is bold, linear but also subtle. What I got from the initial interview with Sarah was that she is quite quiet but confident. I felt that uppercase was appropriate over lowercase because of the idea of boldness and also because of the influence of her favourite designer HelloVon. Because the design is fairly complex and almost abstract I want a base typeface that is straightforward. Bebas is one of my favourite uppercase fonts and I think fits in with HelloVon's style, but I don't know if softer elements and more curves are needed which is why I have been testing Franchise Bold, which has curved edges.
